Announcing Elise Broadway’s Exhibition “Studies of Itoshima”

We are happy to announce Studies of Itoshima, an exhibition by Elise Broadway, as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Qualification:
Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, Certificate Degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Recently, I received a travel scholarship named the “Sheidt Travel Award”, and won funds from the PAFA Venture Fund.

Artist Statement:
Elise Broadway is fascinated by the construction of space that integrates, like collage, several realities that layer upon one another. The scenes she creates, many of which intend to express a memory or experience, encompass the senses and aim to capture various overwhelming feelings. Although chaotic transitions from indoors to outdoors and modifications of light often occur, she wishes to culminate the picture plane with an overall sense of harmony. Through distinct imagery, collage, and subtle three-dimensional changes, she wishes to illustrate certain feelings or experiences she has personally encountered.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

Recently, I have been interested in the concept of local identity represented through imagery of cuisine and domestic dining settings. Through the small body of work I have created while here at Studio Kura, I hope to have faithfully depicted distinct, authentic Japanese daily life and the individuals I met during my stay. In the style of my recent paintings, I enjoy creating images that take up an interesting place on the picture plane; by allowing the image to breath through open spaces juxtaposed with small, detailed clusters of imagery, I want to accurately recreate my wonderful experiences.
