Announcing Laurence Rimes’s Exhibition “海と土地 / Sea and Land”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition 海と土地 / Sea and Land by Laurence Rimes on September 23 (Sat) and 24 (Sun), as a result of his activity during his stay at Studio Kura.

Laurence Rimes has completed 5 years training in sculpture and printmaking at the Canberra School of Art (ANU) Australia. Initially concentrating on sculpture his interests now focus on drawing using charcoal, pastel and acetate sheet for printing.
His practice uses subjects that are sculptural within a landscape, such as stone quarries, man made structures and people going about their daily work.

Here are some words from the artist himself.

These drawings have come about from my observations of Itoshima fishing and agricultural industries.

I like to work by daily moving out in concentric circles, recording what takes my interest and at times magnifying–moving deeper into the image.

My use of colour and cut off image is influenced by Japanese wood block prints.
