Announcing Kate Gorrie’s Exhibition “Unspoken Home”

We are happy to announce Unspoken Home, an exhibition by Kate Gorrie, as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Through her playful visual imagery, there is an exploration into the reflective nature of our interconnected human existence. Her illustration inquisitively explores the nature of the mind in narrative and how this movement connects us to our identity ever changing. An inherent love for the natural world inspires the metaphors and symbols of her work, which dance upon a philosophical playground of imagery. Using both fine detail and simple space, her work interrelates a sense of movement and connection.

Whilst her artwork may evoke bizarre paradigms, there is an invitation to explore the nature of the mind & examine the fabric of our existence. Her works are an expression of hope in our creative potential, wherein our identity is shifted from the vessels we’ve constructed to be free in the bottomless bucket of existence which they came from.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

‘Unspoken Home’ is an exploration into the identity of home. When I first arrived in Itoshima, I was captivated by the architecture surrounding my new neighbourhood. It lead me to reflect on my past homes in Australia & what memories I have on them. This then lead me to question “what is home?” I’ve taken this question with me through my 8 weeks here and have come to explore home beyond the walls of a building, but as an experience we create. In every moment we are alive, we have the capacity to create home there. Home is a frame of mind. Home is not just a place where you sleep, but it’s the place where you stand.

My illustrations of the simple humans reflect back the inner nature we all have been given upon birth. From this angle, from the moment we are born, we are home. I use their simple form as the way of exploring our commonalities rather than differences. Together we create home, with our collaborative human nature. So I invite you now to collaborate in this space & as the English saying goes “make yourself at home”.
