Announcing Molly Garcia-Underwood’s Exhibition “For Future Reference”

We are happy to announce For Future Reference, an exhibition by Molly Garcia-Underwood, as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Molly García-Underwood is an emerging artist based in Adelaide, South Australia. García-Underwood completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts & Design at the Adelaide College of the Arts with a Major in Photography in 2015.
García-Underwood likes to play with objects and bodies and light to create works that explore concepts of power, permanence, interference and manipulation. Her practice is not restricted by any one particular medium, with her work utilizing aspects of photography, video, sculpture and installation.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

The Japanese art of ikebana is a meditative act of arrangement in which the artist ‘gives life’ to plants and objects. This silent practice injects energy and vitality into the arrangement through the command of the artist’s hand. However, as a result of the artist’s intervention these living sculptures can only remain temporary.
García-Underwood has drawn inspiration from the ephemeral and manipulating nature of this traditional Japanese art form to translate it into works that utilise aspects of photography, sculpture and installation. For Future Reference is a study in the nature of control, impermanence and interference. Through experimentation and play, García-Underwood challenges the viewer’s perception of her chosen mediums and invites them to reassess their understanding of tangibility and actuality. In her final works she will attempt to document the act of ‘giving life’, in all its fleeting beauty, through the power of her (the artist’s) hand.

* We will hold an opening party and an artist talk on Saturday the 23rd, starting at 15:00 15:30.
* Exhibitions by other 4 artists (Tara Benjamin-Morgan, Shari Diamond, Beste Miray Doğan, Michelle Pei Ting Huang) will be held during the same exhibition period.
