Announcing Ester Poyas’s Exhibition “Expressions and Emotions”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Expressions and Emotions by Ester Poyas on August 26 (Sat) and 27 (Sun), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

In 2016 Ester Poyas completed a Graduate Certificate in Visual Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, Australia.
It was during this final year that she developed a project in response to the photographic portraits of the participants in the work of Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present. The photos taken of each of these participants show a range of emotions, including being brought to tears. By appropriating these photographs, it was her intention to capture the expression, and/or emotion portrayed, rather than making a direct copy of the photographic images.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

My intention is to marry portraits, sourced from photographs, with recycled Japanese textiles, referencing the Wabi Sabi philosophy of impermanence and imperfection. The aim is to capture the spirit of the expression, rather than to render an exact duplication of the image.
