Announcing Kai Richards’s exhibition “Summer. Yep, it’s hot. 夏。やっぱり暑いねー。”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Summer. Yep, it’s hot. 夏。やっぱり暑いねー。 by Kai Richards on August 24(Sat.) & 25(Sun.), as a result of his activity during his stay at Studio Kura.

Kai Richards is specializes in drawing based in Strongsville, United States. He has received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing at the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2019. His work has been displayed in several shows in Cleveland. His work explores the ordinary life of people by burning animals doing human actions on wood. He works hand in hand with his material, getting inspiration for the characters from the wood itself using the knots, patterns, and grain. He believes in the importance of the simple things we do everyday and looks to highlight them with his animal characters.

This exhibition, “Summer. Yep, it’s hot. 夏。やっぱり暑いねー。” looks to portray the hotness of Japanese summer as well as common activities associated with summer vacation. The actions displayed in the artworks are of my own experiences mixed with summer actions in general. Each piece uses some part of the wood, either the grain or the knots, as an important part of the image. The material and the wood burning work together to create fun and lively anthropomorphic animals.
