ナンシー・ヨシイは、コラージュ、デジタル写真、モノプリント、ジュエリー、繊維、ファウンドオブジェクト彫刻、ミクストメディアといった分野で活動するファインクラフトアーティストです。30年間、陶芸家としてのキャリアを積んできた彼女は、コラージュやミクストメディアの世界に足を踏み入れることで、色彩、パターン、そして構図の自由さを見出しました。
ナンシーは、福岡で10代から20代初めまでの9年間を過ごし、彼女の作品には強い日本美学の影響が見られます。正式な美術教育を受けていない彼女ですが、ニューヨークのロングアイランドクラフトギルドに所属するファインクラフトアーティストたちから44年間にわたる温かい指導とサポートを受けたことを感謝しています。
彼女の現在の作品は抽象的なものから具象的なものまでさまざまで、使用される素材も多岐にわたります。どんな素材でも、その作品に「合う」ものは積極的に取り入れられます。興味深い「ゴミ」の収集が趣味で、特に廃棄物の再利用を楽しんでいます。作品のテーマは環境問題や政治的なテーマ、植物の影響を受けたもの、そして純粋な抽象作品まで幅広く展開しています。2次元のコラージュ作品に加え、ミクストメディアのペーパーキルト、紙やミクストメディアのジュエリー、手作りのグリーティングカード、等身大の紙製ティーカップ、ファウンドオブジェクト彫刻、手作りの本なども制作しています。
ナンシーは、ニューヨークの大都市圏を中心にソロおよびグループ展で作品を展示しています。彼女は、スタジオメイトである繊維アーティストのサリー・ショアとともに、ニューヨーク州ローカストバレーにある素敵なスタジオスペースを共有しています。
Nancy Yoshii is a fine craft artist working in collage, digital photography, monoprint, jewelry, fiber, found object sculpture and mixed media. After 30 years as a ceramic artist, she has found it liberating to enter the world of color, pattern, and composition that is collage and mixed media.
Nancy spent nine years as a teen and young adult in Fukuoka, and her work often reflects a strong Japanese aesthetic influence. An artist with no formal training, she is the grateful recipient of 44 years of nurturing and generosity from her fellow fine craft artists in the Long Island Craft Guild in New York.
Her current work, both abstract and figurative, is composed of many materials…whatever works is invited into the piece. An inveterate collector of “interesting” trash, she especially enjoys recycling castoffs. Themes vary, ranging from environmental and political issues to botanical influences, to pure abstractions. In addition to two-dimensional collage work, she also creates mixed media paper quilts, a line of paper/mixed media jewelry, handmade greeting cards, life-size paper teacups, found object sculpture, handmade books and more.
Nancy exhibits her work in solo and group exhibitions around the New York metropolitan area. She and her studio mate, fiber artist Sally Shore, share a lovely studio space on Long Island in Locust Valley, New York.
