Justin Seiji Waddell（ジャスティン・セイジ・ワデル）は、アルバータ州モヒクンシス（カルガリー）にあるアルバータ・アート大学（Alberta University of the Arts）の美術学部で、アーティスト兼准教授として活動しています。現在、CARFAC National（カーファック・ナショナル）の副会長を務めるほか、Peripheral Review、C the Visual Art Foundation、BlackFlash Magazine、New Media Caucus、Immigrant Council for Arts Innovation、そして全カナダ日系人協会（NAJC）のArts, Culture, and Education（ACE）委員会の理事を兼任しています。
これまで、カナダ国内のさまざまなアーティスト・ラン・センターやフェスティバル、ギャラリー、雑誌などで多様な役割を担ってきました。Prefix Photo、Trinity Square Video、Lola Magazine、アート・ギャラリー・オブ・オンタリオ（Art Gallery of Ontario）、The New Gallery、Emmedia、Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Festivalなどでの経験を積んでいます。また、YYZ Artists’ OutletやStride Art Gallery Associationのディレクターを務め、アルバータ州カルガリーにある全年齢対象のアート＆ミュージック会場「Local Library」の創設メンバーとしても活動してきました。
2024年の秋には、ビクトリア大学の日本系カナダ人レガシーズ・プロジェクト（Japanese Canadian Legacies Project）、グローバルスタディーズセンター（Centre for Global Studies）、アジア太平洋イニシアチブセンター（Centre for Asia Pacific Initiatives）が連携する「Past Wrongs, Future Choices」のアーティスト・イン・レジデンスを務めました。2025年初頭には、福岡県糸島市のStudio Kuraのアーティスト・イン・レジデンスとして再び日本を訪れています。そこで、太陽エネルギーを利用した動力彫刻の制作や日本海での音声録音を行うと同時に、時の計測方法や銅鏡の歴史に関するリサーチを進める計画です。
Justin Seiji Waddell is an artist and Associate Professor in the School of Visual Art at the Alberta University of the Arts in Mohkinstsis (Calgary), Alberta. He is currently the Vice President of CARFAC National, Board member of Peripheral Review, C the Visual Art Foundation, BlackFlash Magazine, the New Media Caucus, the Immigrant Council for Arts Innovation, and the Arts, Culture, and Education Committee (ACE) of the National Association of Japanese Canadians.
He has worked in various capacities at several artist-run centers, festivals, galleries, and magazines in Canada, including Prefix Photo, Trinity Square Video, Lola Magazine, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the New Gallery, Emmedia, and Mountain Standard Time Performative Art Festival. He has served as the Director at YYZ Artists’ Outlet, the Director of the Stride Art Gallery Association, and as a founding member with the every-age art and music venue, Local Library in Calgary, Alberta.
During the Fall of 024, he was an Artist in Residence with the Past Wrongs, Future Choices as a part of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Project, the Centre for Global Studies, and the Centre for Asia Pacific Initiatives at the University of Victoria.
In early 2025, he will be returning to Japan as an Artist in Residence with Studio Kura in Itoshima, Fukuoka Prefecture to research the measurement of time and the history of bronze mirrors while building kinetic solar sculptures and making audio recordings from the Sea of Japan.
