Madeleine Becker (b. 1997, USA) is a filmmaker and photographer whose work is motivated by examinations of the “gaze”: who holds the power to look, and who is being seen?
The histories of cinematic and photographic practice have often answered that it is a white, male, and/or western looker that perceives others through a lens of desired consumption, possession, and ownership. Madeleine’s work across narrative and documentary spaces seeks to expose and interrogate these histories, and to explore new forms of visual language not predicated on ownership.
