フィロ・オウェレーン（1992年生まれ）は、オランダ・アムステルダム出身のビジュアルアーティスト、作家、日本学研究者です。 彼女のビジュアルスタイルは、日本の視覚文化（特に木版画や漫画）からの影響を受けた太く力強い（アウト）ラインと平面的な表現が特徴的です。フィロは自身の作品を「具象的でカラフル、そして親密なビジュアルストーリーテリング」と表現しており、絵画とドローイングの交差点に位置する作品を制作しています。 フィロは紙を支持体とし、グアッシュ、水彩、日本のマーカー、色鉛筆などを組み合わせたミクストメディアで制作を行います。日本や日本の視覚文化への関心は、作品の視覚面だけでなくテーマ面にも反映されています。また彼女は自身が描いたドローイングや絵画、写真などを再構成したコラージュ作品も手がけ、素材を重ね合わせることで新たな表現を生み出しています。近年は「瞑想的なドローイングとペインティング」と呼ぶ抽象表現にも取り組むようになりました。さらに執筆活動にもより多くの時間を割き、インスタグラムでは「Longcovidperikelen」というアカウント名で、長期的な病状（慢性疾患）に至った自身の体験をシェアしています。 フィロの作品は、これまで数々のギャラリーや展示スペースでの個展・グループ展で紹介されてきました。2020年には、2019年に滞在したアーティスト・イン・レジデンス「Artists’ Retreat No-Mu」（亀岡市）でのプロジェクトを元にしたアートブック『Stories from Kameoka』を自主出版しました。アムステルダム大学のVox-Popは、この本について「『Stories from Kameoka』においてフィロは、日本の象徴的な名所に焦点を当てるのではなく、地方の日常生活を親密で愛情に満ちた視点で描いている」と評しています。 日本学研究者としては、現在「Hotei Japanese Prints」というギャラリーに勤務し、日本の木版画のほか、挿絵本、漆芸、ブロンズなど多岐にわたる日本美術を扱っています。このギャラリーでは、ミュージアム向けに巡回展を企画し、カタログも制作しています。フィロは複数の著書に共著者として参加しており、2022年には『Shin Hanga: The New Prints of Japan 1900-1960』の執筆にも携わりました。
Philo Ouweleen (1992) is a visual artist, writer and Japanologist from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her visual style is characterized by its bold (out)lines and flatness, inspired by Japanese visual culture (in particular woodblock prints and manga). She describes her work as figurative, colourful and intimate visual storytelling. Philo’s work is at the intersection of painting and drawing.
Philo works on paper with mixed media, her favourite materials include gouache, watercolour, Japanese markers and (colour)pencils. Her interest in Japan and Japanese visual culture is reflected in her work both visually as well as thematically. She also makes collage work by using her own materials (drawings, paintings, photos) and layering them, creating something new. Lately Philo has been experimenting with abstract art, creating what she calls ‘meditative drawings and paintings’. She is dedicating more time to her love for writing and has been sharing her experiences of becoming chronically ill under the name ‘Longcovidperikelen’ on Instagram.
Philo has exhibited her work in both solo and group shows in various galleries and exhibition spaces. In 2020 she self-published the artbook ‘Stories from Kameoka’, the result of an art project that was started during an artist-in-residence program in Kameoka at Artists’ Retreat No-Mu in 2019. Vox-Pop UVA: “With Stories from Kameoka, Philo paints an image of Japan, in which the iconic highlights make way for an intimate and loving portrait of daily life in rural Japan.”
As a Japanologist she is currently employed at the art gallery Hotei Japanese Prints, specializing in Japanese woodblock prints but also featuring illustrated books, lacquerware, bronze and other forms of Japanese art. The gallery curates travelling print exhibitions for museums with accompanying catalogues. Philo is co-author of several books, including ‘Shin Hanga: The New Prints of Japan 1900-1960’ (2022).
