Vanessa Hudig（ヴァネッサ・フディヒ）はアムステルダム出身のアーティスト／美術教師で、複数のメディアを用いて制作活動を行っています。
制作の出発点として彼女は、書籍やポストカード、地図といった既存の資料をよく取り入れます。これらのオブジェクトには歴史的な意味合いが宿るだけでなく、神道的なアニミズムのような “魂” も秘められていると感じています。
「東京・神保町での初日、私は古書店を漁っているうちに 1930 年の地図帳を見つけました。地図は、人間の想像力の美しさや可能性を示す一方で、国境の線引きや “所有” という破壊的な側面も内包しています。
私は地図を絵画の支持体として用いるのが好きです。そこに描くのは主に自然の細部——葉や枝の偶発的な形は、上空から眺める険しい海岸線や山脈、川の形と呼応しているように思えるのです。」
スタジオクラでの滞在中、ヴァネッサは木版画（浮世絵）や墨絵（墨彩画）など複数の日本の技法に挑戦し、日本的なイメージやステレオタイプを幾層にも重ねた “ミルフィーユ” のような作品世界を立ち上げることで、独自のスピリットあふれる物語を紡ぎ出したいと考えています。
Vanessa Hudig is an artist and art teacher from Amsterdam, working in several mediums.
As a starting point she often uses existing materials such as books, postcards and maps. These objects are often loaded with both historical significance as well as embodied with a certain anime such as in Shinto-thought.
“On my first day in Jimbōchō Tokyo, I was scavenging through the secondhand bookstalls and came upon an atlas from 1930. Maps represent on the one hand the beauty and potential of our imaginativeness, but on the other hand a destructive side; the delineation of borders and the concept of rightfully owning a place.
I like to use the maps as a surface for my paintings, mostly details of nature. The coincidental forms of leaves and branches are comparable to the shapes of rugged coasts, mountains and rivers as seen from a birds eye view.”
At Studio Kura Vanessa wants to work in several Japanese crafts, like woodcut printing (ukiyo-e) and ink painting (sumi-e) and stack up multiple Japanese ideas and stereotypes into a mille-feuille that draws up its own spirited narrative.
