Clare Blackwell is an artist based in Oakland, California.
Her work explores the emotional resonance of built environments—how spaces hold memory or harbor hidden historical violence—through her primary medium of drawing. Against narratives designed to make us forget, Clare’s work centers the struggle for collective memory as essential to sustained resistance across generations.
Drawing from a background in urban design, Clare’s practice bridges architectural precision and intuitive mark-making to create a fragmented archive of memory. Haptic processes using tracing paper and soft graphite transfers, combined with techniques such as German-inspired scissor cutting (Scherenschnitte), allow her to layer surfaces and trace sites where personal memory and collective history collide, in order to make the past, present.
Beyond independent practice, Clare organizes with Artists Against Apartheid, supporting artists in building the cultural front: mobilizing action and fostering solidarity with Palestine and all communities resisting imperialist oppression.
