Nick Uglow is an American artist, born and raised in Northern California. He is currently in his fourth year studying at the University of California, Santa Cruz(UCSC) for a bachelors in fine art.
His work consists primarily of oil and acrylic based abstract paintings and illustrated works, and since the start of 2022 he has also been focusing on printmaking with an emphasis on woodblock. Nick’s art practice is about exploring emotion and embracing an ambiguous narrative so viewers can create their own stories. Subjectivity and individual experience creates the basis for Nick’s art.
During his time at Studio Kura, Nick will create a series of paintings and woodblock prints centering around the theme of comfort and discomfort. Nostalgic, powerful and mundane at times, Nick is interested in better understanding how to best achieve a yin-yang-like balance between comfort and discomfort. He hopes that his time in Japan will allow him to better understand and ponder on the different perceptions we all share regarding comfort.
Nick will be staying in Studio Kura for next 3 months. Please come see his beautiful artworks!!
