Announcing Ann Mcginley’s Exhibition “indelible green”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition indelible green by Ann Mcginley on August 26 (Sat) and 27 (Sun), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Ann McGinley is a Melbourne (Australia) artist.
Ann has completed a Masters of Contemporary Art at the VCA (University of Melbourne) where she concentrated on the application of a range of media, watercolour, ink, acrylic, oil and aerosol on canvas, board and paper. Her works have no intended beginning or end, rather they seek to explore the intersection of landscape and psyche.

For the last 2 years Ann has been using Japanese watercolour as a contemporary medium on canvas. The watercolour’s staining and dripping into the canvas becomes a metaphor for landscape’s effect on emotion.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

Ann Mcginley’s large scale paintings are a response to the verdant greens of Ikisan. The mixed media, mostly watercolour works, result from her investigation of Studio Kura’s immediate environment. Using loose brush work and line, Ann abstractly renders the encroachment of the densely wooded surrounding hills onto Ikisan’s carefully tended rice fields and market gardens. Coming from drought in southern Australia Ann has enjoyed the application of multiple hues of green in making the works in ‘indelible green’.
Ann uses a staining technique as an optimistic portrayal of the permanence of nature. At the same time these paintings are reminders of the gradual global eradication of the small scale market garden.

Ann McGinley (Australia) Residence: August 2017

Her 4 week residency at Studio Kura will allow Ann the opportunity to concentrate on the light and pattern of the local landscape in a series of small abstract watercolour works on canvas. Ann hopes to explore facets of the Japanese aesthetic and introduce these elements into her work. In turn, this will be a trajectory for future work back in her Melbourne studio.
