We are pleased to announce an exhibition “One begins with ‘no'”<\/strong> by Ja Min Yie on March 21(Sat.) & 22(Sun.), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ja Min Yie<\/a><\/strong> is a perceptual painter and draughtsman from Seoul, Korea. She received her BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 and her MFA in Painting from the Marchutz School of Fine Arts in 2017. She attended the MASS MoCA residency program in 2019, and has exhibited in France, the US, Canada and China. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art historian Lionello Venturi once wrote, “To make a work of art, must one begin by saying ‘no’?” Venturi was referring to the practical constraints of an artist and of art-making, but for Ja Min Yie, the inquiry addresses the method behind her recent paintings, negation as a means of comprehending perceived appearances. Appearances rarely are what we think they are; neither are they something else. Yie\u2019s paintings are a search through a series of \u2019no\u2019s\u2014neither this, nor not this\u2026<\/em>
