am interested in how art can activate an ecological way of thinking. Scientific and surreal, my work intertwines the elemental and mythological. Spanning performance, video, sculpture, and ceramics, I am interested in the agency of materials and their potential as witnesses; full of history, story, warning, and hope. For more than half a decade my research has been focused on nuclear history, specifically waste, grief, and inheritance. I have conducted research and worked at multiple sites related to nuclear development including the Northwest Territories, where Uranium was initially pulled from the ground and New Mexico where the first atomic bomb was detonated. The shifting lens of the Nuclear is a fascinating case study to examine power, persuasion, and the human imagination, especially true in thinking through environmental slow-violence, toxicity, and our current climate crisis. Radiation is a threat that is not visible. It can pass through walls and permeate bodies, and environments, and remain a hazard for over ten thousand years. I think of it as a haunting, something unleashed long ago but still persistent; an inheritance that requires responsibility despite being obscured. My personal experience of the Nuclear is through grief, in the loss of my Grandfather due to radiation poisoning. My relationship with atomic history has since become multi-faceted, reflecting the complexity of this ecological moment through awe, horror, and potential hope.During my month-long residency at studio Kura I will be working on a new project that focuses on water, both the poetics and politics of this natural resource and its role in nuclear developments.I will be making cyanotypes of seaweed and marine life on silk banners.My interest in cyanotype and seaweed is sparked not only by their material quality but have historically been consumed to protect the human thyroid in the case of a nuclear emergency. <\/div><\/div>It is interesting to think that a cure for the ocean\u2019s nuclear contamination also potentially exists in its depths. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
