Paula Kovarik is a full-time artist and fiber art teacher from Memphis, TN, USA. She has been profiled in Smithsonian American Craft and FiberArt Now magazines. Her work is featured in Art Quilts Unfolding \u2013 50 Years of Innovation and Art Quilts International Abstract & Geometric. Her work has been collected by the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, NE, the International Airport in Memphis, TN as well as private collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stitching is my second language. I look for the invisibles and uncanny in life\u2014things broken, worn, stunning or ignored\u2014things that don\u2019t make sense or are just below the surface. I use the quilted form, sandwiching fabric with layers of batting to achieve a textured surface. The sewing machine is my drawing tool. it gives me a strong line against a giving surface. My work has evolved over the years from narrative to something rawer and more expressive. I quilt, cut, re-assemble and repair the fabric. The process is everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During my residency at Studio:Kura my focus is on being open to the unfamiliar. I don\u2019t speak or read Japanese and because of that my response is as an observer. I\u2019m curious about how we communicate with silent gestures, body language and oral cues. I\u2019ll be asking myself several questions: How do I draw silence? How can I translate my observations?
