My name is Alexandra Beguez, an illustrator and cartoonist on a never-ending journey of exploring my voice as a visual storyteller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My stories examine the inner workings and social interactions of my characters. Through a repeating cast of quirky characters, I explore themes such as loneliness, the individual versus society, and unconventional relationships. I blend biographical elements\u2014personal stories or direct observations and gleanings\u2014into my work, allowing me to reveal my own ideas and vulnerabilities by way of illustrated stand-ins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My family\u2019s immigrant history also informs much my work. As a child, I would sit and listen attentively for hours as family members recounted stories of their youth. There was an urgency to my listening; it felt very important to witness their recitation. Now, it\u2019s my duty to preserve and carefully document these stories. The need to chronicle stories extends to my fictional work, where I aim to faithfully detail my characters\u2019 escapades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My illustrations are created using an array of traditional materials, including gouache, colored pencil, crayon, and ink. Recently, I have embraced working digitally on my iPad for my sequential work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an artist in residence at Studio Kura, I will be working on my graphic novel: an anthology of three fantasy short stories that revolve around a reoccurring character in my work called Alien Raver. My main focus will be to finish sketching the first of three stories, then create the final line art and ink several pages, using the lush and varied landscape of Itoshima as inspiration for the setting in the graphic novel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
