Golda King

Golda King (The Philippines) Residence: November 2019

Born in Cebu in 1983, Golda King earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting in 2013 at The Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. She has shown her work in various group exhibitions in Cebu, San Francisco, Oakland, Iceland, Tainan, Singapore, Manila.

To date, the Cebuano painter has been awarded three artist residencies: Gullkistan, Center for Creativity in Laugarvatn in Iceland in 2014, Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont in 2017 and The Denis Diderot Grant, Chateau Orquevaux in Champagne-Ardenne, France in 2018. She will have her 4th solo show this coming June 2020 in Qube Gallery in Cebu City.

Golda King paints with an aim to remedy her doubts. King works primarily with watercolour, graphite and gouache –if not with oil paint for massive canvases.

The subjects are usually of bare faces in delicate compositions that echo a familiar stillness, and her palette –the most telling trait of the artist’s creative disposition– is a blend of soft colors with hints of mystery and darkness, or traces of serenity and lightness. The blur and anonymity of her characters establish, without the slightest intention, a striking bond between artist and viewer, a seclusion that places both in a state of secrecy and allure. As King engages in experimentation, there are works in between the release of her major collections that depict her daily ‘visual diaries’. These entries are painted as abstractions, made to journal the artist’s personal encounters and views, expressed or experienced through art, practice and sometimes, conversation.

To Golda, painting is a process of self-awareness. “My works are a reconstruction of memories.”

In Studio Kura, I will be painting images of my safe place, a quiet place where my mind wanders off to, to keep negative thoughts at bay.
