Announcing Linsey Walker’s Exhibition “Postcards from Itoshima”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Postcards from Itoshima by Linsey Walker on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of his activity during his stay at Studio Kura.

Linsey Walker is currently in his 2nd year of study for his Bachelor of Creative Arts at the University of Southern Queensland in Australia. His current studies include printmaking and ceramics.

My work in Itoshima became a series of postcards in response to the local area. These postcards were created from photographs, transformed by artificial intelligence, and drawn by a robot. They explore themes of automation and its impact on the arts.

Announcing Margaux Derhy’s Exhibition “Superflat memory”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Superflat memory by Margaux Derhy on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Born in December 1985 in France, Margaux Derhy started to paint at the age of 17. Self educated,she joined in 2015 the 3 years intensive cycle of Ateliers Beaux-Arts of the city of Paris (ABA) with Gonzalo Belmonte. In 2017, she spent several months in South Africa with a 3 months international artist residency at Greatmore Studios in Cape Town.
Her painting is figurative. It is worked from photographs, archives and personal photographs. Her major series of oils MEMOIRE VIVE is a re-appropriation of family archives that she exhumed with the desire to offer memories a new colour.

I will show a serie of painting that will follow my last years interest about family memory but influenced by the textures, sounds, images, feelings, readings from this stay at Studio Kura in Japan. Also, the Superflat movement has been a deep inspiration in this new style developed here as an experimentation to go further and try new directions.

Announcing Charlyn Reynolds’s Exhibition “True Whimsy”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition True Whimsy by Charlyn Reynolds on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Charlyn Reynolds is specialized in combining hot glass sculpting with various medias. She is currently a second year Master of Fine Art Candidate in Intermedia-Glass at the University of Texas-Arlington in Arlington, Texas. Charlyn received her BFA in 2011 at Illinois State University in glass, under the instruction of John Miller.
She has worked for both the Toledo Museum of Art and the Corning Museum of Glass.

True Whimsey depicts fantastical creatures in their golden habitat. The title is satirical, as neither the gold nor the creatures are “real”. The materiality of the camp exuberance of gold beckons my viewers. Questions will arise about the true nature of this fantastical scene and the absurdity of it all.

Announcing Gaelle Pelachaud’s Exhibition “Movement on the rice fields”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Movement on the rice fields by Gaelle Pelachaud on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Gaëlle Pelachaudis a visual artist and researcher in France. She practices painting, drawing and the artist’s book.
She graduated from the National Superior School in Applied Arts and Artistic career of Olivier de Serres in Paris. In 1984 she received a scholarship for studies at Cooper Union in New York (engraving studio), and in 1986 graduated from the from the Nationale Superior in Decorative Arts in Paris ( engraving). She wrote a thesis in Plastic Arts and Sciences of Art « Animated Books, the moving image, » for the Pantheon-Sorbonne U.F.R.4 Paris in 2009. In 2010, it was published under the title Animated Books : From Paper and Digital » Harmattan edition.
In 2016, as a complement to this first publication, Pyramyd editions published a new version for a larger audience, Animated Books, Between Paper and Screen : History, Techniques, Creations, Perspectives. »

Announcing Mary Jane Duffy’s Exhibition “Signals”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Signals by Mary Jane Duffy on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Mary Jane Duffy is an artist interested in the ways technology is changing how we experience the world. Mostly making paintings and drawings, she investigates this idea by looking for the moments when the artifice of technology is made clearly visible. Duffy has exhibited her work in numerous group and solo shows in the U.S. and abroad, and she is a Lecturer in DePaul’s Art Media and Design Department.

Mary Jane Duffy’s project explores both the local environment and traditional arts of Itoshima and Japan as well as how global, digital technologies interfere with our world. The idea of travel has inspired her to make installations- – found objects, paint, Sumi ink and paper emphasizing fragility and temporality – works that can be easily packed up and moved.

Announcing Shiro Akiyoshi’s Exhibition “Nuclear Club”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Nuclear Club by Shiro Akiyoshi on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of his activity during his stay at Studio Kura.

Shiro Akiyoshi is an artist and graphic designer originally from Fukuoka, but living and working in Chicago for the past 20 years.
His work has been exhibited in Japan as well as the United States. He has shown at ARC Gallery, Wood Street gallery Daley Center and Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, as well as Muriel Geupin gallery in Brooklyn, NY.
Akiyoshi is an Associate Professor at DePaul University’s School of Design. He has an M.F.A. in Visual Communication from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Shiro Akiyoshi’s current project explores digital imaging, illustration, and montage, combining digital imaging and traditional Japanese materials. Akiyoshi visually explores the relationship between ideas of war and protection by combining traditional Japanese Buddhist imagery with modern political figures and war imagery.

We are pleased to announce an exhibition impermanent papers materiality of colors by Karima Duchamp on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Karima Duchamp is a visual artist based in France. She graduated with a Master degree in Fine Arts and a Ceramic Diploma. Her practice relies on a sensitive combination of drawing, painting ans sculptural ceramics as well as by the enigmatic and subbtle presentation of their picturesque motifs. She is interested in color, the way color fades, patines, wear and ages.

Her work has been shown across Europe and worldwide :the Salon Art+Design in New York, Design Miami in the USA, in China, in Germany, in Spain, in Belgium, in Switzerland during Art Design Basel.

The unique landscapes of Itoshima broaden Karima Duchamp artistic practice and help develop new projects that are directly related to the lexicon of these distinct geographies.
She highlights the vulnerability of the natural environment and its impending destruction. She visually illustrates how delicate and fleeting nature can be. Simple, these materials possess an expressive power, as if they emerged as much from the landscape they were inspired by.

Announcing Lindi Shi ‘s Exhibition “再•度 Re: told”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition 再•度 Re: told by Lindi Shi on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Lindi Shi 石琳迪 focuses on printmaking and book art. She comes from China but she has been living in US since 2013. She just graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison with
a bachelor degree in fine art and Mathematics. After her residency in Studio Kura, she is going to pursuit her Master of fine art degree in Rhode Island School of Design.

What makes a story and what makes the art exhibition? The idea behind interaction is allowing the audience to fully participate with the gallery so that one print can generate many narratives, and from the narratives, the artist will create artworks from these narratives. This exhibition is not about the fixed art pieces but the endless communication between the artist, art pieces, and the audiences.

Announcing Izaro Ieregi’s Open Studio

We are pleased to announce an open studio to see Izaro Ieregi’s studio practice on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Izaro Ieregi (Algorta, 1987). Graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV-EHU (2010), she has carried out individual exhibitions at the Tower House of Ariz, Basauri (2017), C.C. San Martin, Buenos Aires (2017) and the Chinese European Art Centre, Xiamen (2017). She is a founding partner of the OKELA space with headquarters in Bilbao.

I start with a work method that goes through a framework of violence with the idea of transfiguring it by recording a performance activity. By using activities registered in archives and making use of a score and devices that enable us to contort our body and distort our voice. Recording a new event. An exercise of form. Performative repetition.

We are pleased to announce an exhibition A man who looks at me, a boy dressed in red and a girl who does not want photos by Maider Gonzalo Salceda on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Maider Gonzalo Salceda, Erandio, Basque country in 1994, graduated from the University of the Basque Country in Fine Arts in 2016. She is currently studying the master’s degree in research and creation at the university. Above all, she works with photography and video. She works with images that she has taken of everyday objects or of everyday acts. This everyday tasks and objects turned out to be the material that she works with.

Behind the image of a girl who does not want photos, several people walk at the same time as the girl. They enter and leave all the time. Like a postcard with batteries or a picture where people walk around.The girl rules. She decides over the rest. Decides who enters and leaves, but she´s impervious to what happens behind her.

Detrás de la imagen de una chica que no quiere fotos pasean varias personas al mismo tiempo que la chica. Entran y salen todo el rato. Como una postal con pilas o un cuadro donde las personas se pasean.
La chica manda. Ella decide sobre el resto. Decide quien entra y quien sale pero se le escapa lo que detrás de ella pueda pasar.
