Announcing Rose Dickson’s Exhibition “Hiding Place”

We are happy to announce Hiding Place, an exhibition by Rose Dickson, in which she will show work she did during her residence at Studio Kura.

Rose Dickson is a visual artist based in Portland, Oregon. She received her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012. With support from Oregon Arts Commission, Rose has recently been an artist in residence at Organhaus Art Space, Chongqing, China. Her work is in the collection of Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art and the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

I am a multimedia artist with a background in photography, which lays a foundation for my art practice. My work explores dichotomies of presence and absence, material and immaterial, surface and expanse. Boundaries of space, time and interaction are explored through various methods and subject matter again and again. Keeping in mind the role of the viewer, the experiential quality of my work invites one to participate within the search.

Here are some words from the artist himself.

My work as a photographer is rooted in affection for urbanized Street Photography, which I began producing in New York City as a child. My work in portraiture, nature, and in the studio, is influenced by this perspective and therefor strives to capture scenes that expose viewers to contradictions in human expectations. I shoot using Nikon 35mm and Canon DSLR cameras. I use Nikkor and Zeiss lenses.

Tea Ceremony with Our Residence Artists

image

The other day our residence artists got invited to tea ceremony at a our neighbors’ house.

After having some sweets while learning about the ceremony, they got to actually enjoy the tea.

image

Even when getting everything explained in a very simplified way, they looked a little confused at the many meaningful details. Aside from the cultural details, everybody loved the tea!

Before they left, Mr. Inoue wished for everyone’s health and blew a conch horn. Thank you, Mr. Inoue!
