Maria Schilder

Maria Schilder (Netherlands) Residency: March 2019

Maria Schilder is an artist specialised in sculptures and objects, based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She graduated from Amsterdam University of Arts.
She has exhibited most frequently in the Netherlands but also in England, France, Estland and two times in Japan. She visited Japan twice before. She used those occasions to learn more about Japanese culture and art, traditional as well as modern.

The sculptures she creates, are a result of experimenting with materials and shapes. Her aim is to express feeling and experience in a concentrated way. She is always looking for materials which can express this feelings and experience as specific as possible. She tries to suggest softness, sensuality and intimacy in her works. Maria Schilder is fascinated by the way Japanese artists, as well as craftsmen, respect and handle the material they work with. Untill now she is working 3-dimensional with wood, marble, alabaster, concrete and pigments.

During her stay at Studio Kura, she would like to make drawings with different tools as pastels, grafit, pencils on all kinds of material, preferably Japanese paper.
