私はアメリカ合衆国出身の学際的アーティストで、テキスタイルを用いた彫刻、ミクストメディアによるインスタレーション、そして紙作品を制作しています。作品には、デザインされ、製造され、選ばれ、購入され、着用され、拒まれ、最終的に廃棄された衣服を素材として用いています。それらは残された履歴を宿す文化的な遺物でもあります。彫刻作品では、こうした素材を縫い合わせたり詰め物をしたりしながら、人形のような形態を組み合わせ、共依存的な関係の中で動きを止めたかのように見える姿を表現しています。
近年は、ドローイングと彫刻のあいだに位置するようなインスタレーション作品にも取り組んでいます。これらの作品には具象的要素と抽象的要素の両方が含まれ、彫刻的な要素と描写的な要素が共存しています。こうしたインスタレーションを通して、人間の脆弱さや心理を探求しており、スケールの劇的な変化や建築との対照的な関係性によって、その感情的な内容をより強く際立たせています。不条理で装飾的なスパンコールのファサードを制作する中で、私は「空虚さ」や「喪失感」といった感覚に形を与えたいと考えています。現在は、カンザス州ローレンスを拠点に制作活動を行っています。
I am a cross-disciplinary artist from the United States, and I create textile-based sculptures, mixed-media installations, and works on paper. In my work, I use found items of clothing that have been designed, manufactured, picked out, purchased, worn, rejected, and finally discarded. They are cultural artifacts, with a residual history. In my sculptures I use this material to sew, stuff, and combine doll-like figures together that appear to be arrested in codependent relationships.
Recently, I have been making installations that sit somewhere in between my drawings and sculptures. They have both figurative and abstract parts, and both sculptural and drawn elements. These installations investigate human vulnerability and psychology and I intensify the emotional content of these installations through dramatic scale changes and contrasting interactions with architecture. As I make these absurd sequined facades, I am hoping to give shape to a sense of emptiness and loss. I live and work in Lawrence, Kansas.
