Steffi Laiは、カナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州の海沿いの地域を拠点に活動するフリーランスのグラフィックデザイナー／ビジュアルアーティストです。彼女の制作は、イラストレーションとグラフィックデザインの要素を行き来しながら、「遊び」の感覚を大切にしています。
彼女が惹かれるのは、古いものやリミナル（境界的）な存在──見過ごされがちな静かな「あいだ」の空間や、自然のライフサイクルのような移ろいの瞬間です。
モチーフやテーマは、幽霊や精霊、人間の経験への考察、生と死、植物や動物、自然の風景、そして時折ユーモアにまで及び、それらすべてが彼女の作品に息づいています。近年は、私たちが空間とどのように関わっているのか、また場所が持つ感情的な重みや記憶、歴史、あるいは想像上の存在について関心を深めており、好奇心と敬意、そして遊び心をもってそれらのテーマに向き合っています。
Studio Kuraでのレジデンス期間中、彼女は古い空間と新しい空間が持つ感情的・雰囲気的な特性を、静かな場所に棲む想像上の存在や生きものたちを描いた、遊び心あふれるイラストレーション作品を通して探求する予定です。
Steffi Lai is a freelance graphic designer and visual artist from coastal British Columbia, Canada. Her practice often blends illustrative and graphic styles with a sense of play. She is drawn to the old and the liminal: quiet, in-between spaces where things may often be ignored or forgotten, and transitions such as nature’s life cycles. Her favourite subject matter and themes vary from ghosts and spirits, commentary on the human experience, life and death, flora and fauna, natural landscapes, and even some humour, which all find their way into her work. Lately, she’s been interested in how we interact with space and how places carry emotional weight, memory, history, or imagined presences, and she tries to approach these ideas with curiosity, care, and play.
During her residency at Studio Kura, she will explore the emotional and atmospheric characteristics of old and new spaces through playful illustrative work featuring imagined beings and entities inhabiting these quiet spaces.
