Announcing Mary Jane Duffy’s Exhibition “Signals”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Signals by Mary Jane Duffy on July 26 (Thu) to 28 (Sat), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

Mary Jane Duffy is an artist interested in the ways technology is changing how we experience the world. Mostly making paintings and drawings, she investigates this idea by looking for the moments when the artifice of technology is made clearly visible. Duffy has exhibited her work in numerous group and solo shows in the U.S. and abroad, and she is a Lecturer in DePaul’s Art Media and Design Department.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

Mary Jane Duffy’s project explores both the local environment and traditional arts of Itoshima and Japan as well as how global, digital technologies interfere with our world. The idea of travel has inspired her to make installations- – found objects, paint, Sumi ink and paper emphasizing fragility and temporality – works that can be easily packed up and moved.

Mary Jane Duffy (United States) Residence : July 2018

Mary Jane Duffy is an artist interested in the ways technology is changing how we experience the world. Mostly making paintings and drawings, she investigates this idea by looking for the
moments when the artifice of technology is made clearly visible- when TV pictures turn to static and snow, when surveillance photographs show text that has been crossed out, creating black boxes on the surface or the cable signal goes bad and images are turned to abstract colored tiles.

Duffy has exhibited her work in numerous group and solo shows in the U.S. and abroad including “Color Key” at The Painting Center in New York City in 2008. One-person exhibitions
include “Glitch” at Bert Green Contemporary Art in Chicago in 2016 and in 2003 "Sparkle" at Masmedula Galerie in Mexico City. In 2002, 2003 and 2005 she received CAAP grants from the Department of Cultural Affairs in Chicago. Duffy is currently represented by Bert Green Fine Art in Chicago.

Duffy is a Lecturer in DePaul’s Art Media and Design Department. She holds B.S. in Studio Art from Skidmore College and an M.F.A. in painting and drawing from Northwestern University.

During her stay, Duffy would like to pursue a project that explores both the natural local environment and traditional arts in Fukuoka as well as the global, digital experience we have of
our world now. The idea of travel has inspired her to think of making an exhibition in a box- artwork that is primarily on paper- using various formats- that can be easily packed up and moved.
