ブルックリンを拠点とするアーティスト、Kiani Kodama（児玉キアニ）は、2020年にクーパー・ユニオン美術学校でBFAを取得し、2018年には京都精華大学で学びました。
非西洋医学、マッサージや姿勢矯正のための道具、日本語の教科書に導かれながら、児玉の彫刻やドローイングは、工業製品や定住の歴史に存在する服従と自由のプロセスを探求しています。
彼の彫刻は、拾い集めたオブジェや陶器・ガラスの鋳造物を組み合わせた構成から成り立っています。彼の造形言語は主に、マッサージ用具、ヘアピン、フォトホルダー、剣山、ナイロン製キーホルダーといったものから構築されています。これらの生き物のようなオブジェは、想像上の遊び場へと還元され、人間の支配から解放された領域に存在し、自由に活動します。
Studio Kuraでは、児玉は2019年に自ら漉いた紙の上に、日本語の教科書からのイメージと彫刻的要素を組み合わせた一連のドローイングに取り組みます。
Kiani Kodama (児玉キアニ) is a Brooklyn based artist. He received his BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art in 2020 and studied at Kyoto Seika University in 2018.
Guided by non western medicine, tools for massage and positioning, and Japanese language textbooks, Kodama’s sculptures and drawings investigate processes of servitude and freedom present in manufactured objects and settlement histories.
Kodama’s sculptures consist of arrangements of found objects and ceramic and glass castings. His vocabulary is primarily constructed of massage tools, hairpins, photo holders, kenzan, (剣山, flower frogs), and nylon keychains. The creature-like objects are returned to an imagined playground wherein the objects exist in a field of liberation, operating free from human subjugation.
At Studio Kura, Kiani will focus on a series of drawings that combine sculptural elements with imagery from Japanese textbooks on paper he made in 2019.
