Announcing Julia Mejnertsen’s Exhibition “Highway 202 to Karatsu”

We are happy to announce Highway 202 to Karatsu, an exhibition by Julia Mejnertsen, in which she will show work she did during her residence at Studio Kura.

Julia Mejnertsen is a photographer based in Copenhagen, Denmark and graduated from Fotoskolen Fatamorgana in photography, where is the most respected photography school in Denmark.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

The series ‘Highway 202 to Karatsu’ is a photographic interpretation of my immediate experiences of the area around Studio Kura in the rural part of Japan. The series is very much the result of living right next to the highway 202 – the only thing that divides me from the kilometers of rice fields that stretch out on the opposite side. There is a quiet air about the place, tension just below the surface. At night time the darkness is profound and scary, the only sound being that of the passing cars and the wind. The farmers are ever present in the landscape even though I rarely see them. When I do, I never see a face. The big shaded hats, always bent over rummaging through the dirt in the middle of a field makes approachability difficult. To me they are anonymous hardworking creatures.

Exhibitions by Wang Min and Yuwen Xue will be held at the same time. Please find an opportunity to visit Studio Kura!
