Announcing Maya Cannon’s Exhibition “Kami”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Kami by Maya Cannon on July 22 (Sat) and 23 (Sun), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.

From Tokyo Japan, Maya Cannon is currently a student at the Rhode Island School of Design working towards a BFA in printmaking. She focuses on the tactile quality and meaning of materials, and is currently interested in exploring what she can do with paper and wood.
While raised in Tokyo, Maya is drawn to the rural areas of Japan, such as her mother’s hometown. These visits inspire her to capture a certain nostalgia towards tradition, and unravel the beauty associated with it. At Studio Kura, she hopes to do so while exploring the surrounding nature and meeting local people.

Here are some words from the artist herself.

Paper has many meanings, many forms. “Kami” exhibits how this exploration of paper evolved while influenced by the surroundings of Itoshima.
