Gina Ariko（ジーナ・アリコ）は、シアトル、ワシントン州に拠点を置く日系アメリカ人の人物画家です。彼女は幼い頃から、隔年で家族を訪ねて小倉、日本を訪れており、そこでおじいちゃんとおばあちゃんが最初に彼女に絵を教えました。彼らとの間に言語や距離の障壁があったにもかかわらず、彼らは芸術への共通の愛情を通じてつながりました。ジーナのアートワークは、彼女の混血の遺産にインスピレーションを受けており、時には「日本人としてはアメリカ人過ぎる」と感じ、またある時には「アメリカ人としては日本人過ぎる」と感じることがあります。この引っ張り合いは彼女の作品に現れており、郷愁、居場所を求める探求、そして家に帰る安心感は、彼女の絵画に繰り返し現れるテーマです。スタジオでの実践に加えて、ジーナはアートクラスを教え、またパートタイムでフローラルデザイナーとしても働いています。スタジオクラでの時間を利用して、ジーナは九州島の春への穏やかな移り変わりにインスピレーションを受けた新しい作品群を開発し、家族との再接続を図っています。
Gina Ariko is a Japanese-American figurative painter based in Seattle, WA. Growing up, she spent every other summer visiting family in Kokura, Japan, where her ojichan and obaachan first taught her to paint. Despite the language and distance barriers between them, they connected through a shared love for art. Gina’s artwork is inspired by her mixed heritage, sometimes feeling “too American to be Japanese” and other times “too Japanese to be American.” This push-and-pull shows up in her work: nostalgia, a search for belonging, and the comfort of returning home are recurring themes in her paintings. In addition to her studio practice, Gina also teaches art classes and works part-time as a floral designer. With her time at Studio Kura, Gina is developing a new body of work inspired by Kyushu island’s gentle transition to spring, and reconnecting with her family.
