Ester Poyas (Australia) Residence: August 2017
In 2016 Ester completed a Graduate Certificate in Visual Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, Australia.
It was during this final year that she developed a project in response to the photographic portraits of the participants in the work of Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present. The photos taken of each of these participants show a range of emotions, including being brought to tears. By appropriating these photographs, it was her intention to capture the expression, and/or emotion portrayed, rather than making a direct copy of the photographic images.
During her residency she will explore the possibilities of using recycled Japanese kimono textiles as an integral part of the presentation of these portraits, which are painted on muslin, using watercolour and traditional Japanese ink.
She will also explore what she calls ‘the moving line’. An abstract series of images using line and colour to give the viewer the impression of movement.
In the past 12 months Ester has exhibited at the Brunswick Street Gallery, Fitzroy, the Graduate Certificate Group Show at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, and the Yarra Sculpture Gallery, Abbotsford.
