Ja Min Yie

Ja Min Yie (South Korea) Residence: January to March 2020

Ja Min Yie is a perceptual painter and draughtsman from Seoul, Korea. She received her BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011 and her MFA in Painting from the Marchutz School of Fine Arts in 2017. She attended the MASS MoCA residency program in 2019, and has exhibited in France, the US, Canada and China.

Ja Min composes her works by being in direct contact with appearances that emerge in the immediate present. The simplicity of this method removes preconceived ideas and dilates reality, revealing forms that are fresh and unassuming. Her works emit a striking luminosity that intimates the nature of these visions.

At Studio Kura, she hopes to explore how the bare surface of a painting or drawing can convincingly suggest substance and light. She wishes to incorporate more of the untouched surface into her work so that it operates as a poetic expression of perceived phenomena.
