Rino Kodama (United States) Residence: September 2018
Rino Kodama is a 20 year old artist who calls Santa Clara, California home. She is currently a third year UCLA student majoring in Fine Arts and minoring in Asian American Studies. Born in Singapore to Japanese parents, and raised in California, she has never lived in Japan and is excited to see what this one month residency will bring. Rino moves between drawing, photography, wearable art, and performance to tell stories of navigating transnational families and Japanese diaspora. Her work has been shown in Los Angeles and Seattle.
Rino plans to merge their interests in drawing and wearable art, by utilizing fabric from old kimonos and yukatas, and reworking them into new creations. Inspired by her grandmother’s saki-ori (Japanese weaving) artistry, Rino will expand on themes of family and belonging through her work.
