ヘレン・チュー（2000年、オーストラリア、リバプール生まれ）は、ダラワールの土地に住み、作品を制作している中国系オーストラリア人のアーティストである。ヘレンは、ナショナル・アート・スクールで絵画を専攻し、美術の学士号を取得しました。ヘレン・チュウの作品には、西洋の抽象表現主義の美学と中国の伝統的な書道の要素が取り入れられています。
朱の作品は、彼女の個人的なディアスポラ（離散）体験を調査しています。東洋と西洋の影響に囲まれて育った朱は、常に自分の文化的アイデンティティに疑問を抱いてきました。 ヘレン・チュウは、周囲に溶け込むために自分の中国での経歴を否定し始め、その結果、罪悪感や断絶を感じるようになりました。Zhuは、西洋の抽象画とカリグラフィーのエネルギーを組み合わせることで、文化的アイデンティティとの複雑な関係を明らかにしています。書道の抽象化は、伝統的な芸術形式を近代化し、帰属意識を見出そうとする朱の絶え間ない不安を生々しく、力強く表現しています。
Studio Kuraに滞在している間、ヘレンは自然と育成の関係を調査することを目的としています。糸島の田舎に囲まれたヘレンは、身近な自然や環境を題材にした実験的な作品を目指しています。
Helen Zhu (b.2000, Liverpool, Australia) is a Chinese Australian artist who lives and creates work on Dharawal land. Helen received her Bachelor’s in Fine Arts at National Art School, majoring in painting.Helen Zhu’s practice incorporates the Western aesthetic of abstract expressionism with elements of traditional Chinese calligraphy.
Zhu’s works investigate her personal experiences of diaspora. Growing up surrounded by Eastern and Western influences, Zhu has always questioned her cultural identity. Helen Zhu began to reject her Chinese background in order to ‘fit in’ with the rest, resulting in feelings of guilt and disconnection.Zhu reveals her complex relationship with her cultural identity as she combines Western abstraction with calligraphic energy.
The abstraction of calligraphy modernises the traditional art form, creating a raw and powerful representation of Zhu’s constant anxiety to find a sense of belonging.During her stay in Studio Kura, Helen aims to investigate the connection between nature and nurture. Enveloped in rural Itoshima, Helen aims to experiment with the immediate nature and environment.
