Announcing Jordan Gower’s Exhibition “Without Anchor”

We are happy to announce an exhibition Without Anchor by Jordan Gower, as a result of his activity during his stay at Studio Kura. This will be shown as a part of Itoshima International Art Festival 2016, Itoshima Arts Farm.

Jordan Gower is an emerging product designer working within a studio-based practice in the ceramics department of JamFactory, Australia. Using various modes of ceramic technique Gower aims to produce objects that touch the edge of both convention and innovation, bringing with it a quality of stillness and necessity. He is interested in the interplay of cultural vernacular and will reflect on contemporary graphic design seen throughout his stay in Fukuoka/Saga Prefectures.

Here are some words from the artist himself.

Taking time away from my regular discipline of ceramics and exploring Japan gives me a chance to think about the ways in which I work. Itoshima in particular is a chance to slow down and observe the movement of the landscape around me and find gestures, often small, that carry on regardless of my perception of them. The breaking of waves, the way the wind carries over rice fields, the lines of movement a crane makes across a stream – all these details contribute to how we view the world. I want to measure some of these actions that occur very simply through repetition. Textures of material and rhythms in form might suggest some aspect of what I observe and through this it may reach its way into my studio practice back in Australia.
