We are pleased to announce an exhibition Map by Laura Williams on June 24 (Sat) and 25 (Sun), as a result of her activity during her stay at Studio Kura.
Laura Williams is a painter based in Perth, Western Australia.
Laura graduated from the University of Western Australia with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2006 and since then has been exhibiting in Perth and around Australia.
Working predominantly with watercolours, Laura’s work draws from her surrounding environment to explore aspects of our relationship with the natural world.
Here are some words from the artist herself.
Since arriving in Itoshima, I have been experimenting with different ways of documenting and mapping the surrounding environment and vegetation.
I was immediately drawn to the way the greenhouses in the fields contain a different type of vegetation but are housed within the broader mountainous landscape. I really like the geometry, transparency and reflectiveness of these structures and have been exploring different aspects of these features.
As part of my practice I take a lot of photos as documentation and then I work from this material in the studio. I have accumulated a big collection of photos of flowers from parks, gardens, roadsides and places I have visited. The flowers here are spectacular and I have begun creating a map as a sort of record of my travels but that also documents some of the plants that grow here.
