Announcing Ian Campbell’s Exhibition “Fragments of Itoshima”

We are pleased to announce an exhibition Fragments of Itoshima by Ian Campbell on March 24 (Saturday) & 25 (Sun), as a result of his activity during his stay at Studio Kura.

Ian Campbell is a filmmaker and multimedia artist who works in video, drawing, installation and performance art. His short films have been screened across Canada at film and experimental media festivals such as Festival Du Nouveau Cinema (Montreal), WNDX (Winnipeg), Antimatter (Victoria), 8Fest (Toronto) and others in Europe and the US.

He has presented performance work using live improvised projected video at artist run centres and performance venues across western Canada. His short films range from the experimental to the comedic and use a variety of effects both low tech and high tech.
He works in the film department of the University of Regina in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Here are some words from the artist himself.

I came to the Studio Kura residency without any particular plan. I knew I would make a film project because of the equipment I brought with me but I wanted to let the place unfold before me to determine the structure of the film. I don’t do a lot of travelling, and when I do I prefer to stay in one place and try to observe the nuances of that place. I use a variety of cinematography techniques including time-lapse photography and the use of underwater cameras. I create collages of fragments of time, trying to simulate unconscious memories of this place that is not my own. I hope that the people of Itoshima will appreciate this particular portrait of their home and that my film will travel elsewhere and inspire audiences outside of Japan.
