We are pleased to announce an exhibition Dual Locations by Ben Harb on October 20 (Sat), 21 (Sun) and 27 (Sat), 28 (Sun), as a result of her activity during his stay at Studio Kura. This will be shown as a part of Itoshima International Art Festival 2018, Itoshima Arts Farm.
Ben Harb is a sound artist, composer and performer from Canberra, Australia. As a graduate of the Australian National University’s School of Music Ben has worked with many members of the local and international experimental music and art communities including the ANU New Music Ensemble, the Experimental Music Studio, Opus and bands such as Ecruteak and Lost Coast. Ben’s work focuses on the relationship between fixed media and live instrumentation with an emphasis on the performer’s agency when playing a piece.
Here are some words from the artist himself.
There is near limitless potential when working with audio field recordings. The medium has a history of work that includes scientific research, ecological study, sound art, sampling and musical applications within a range of contemporary genres. Field recordings of the natural and “man-made” worlds have created soundscapes that have acted as inspiration for composers such as Olivier Messiaen, John Cage, and Pauline Oliveros.
Dual Locations is a sound art installation that makes use of both space and location. Through capturing recordings of the area around Studio Kura along with sounds from Fukuoka city and combining the resulting soundscape with original composition, Dual Locations makes use of spatialised dissemination to create an immersive auditory experience that an audience can navigate and experience in their own way.
